Episode Five: Consumer Choice, Alternatives & COVID-19

With our global community facing an abundance of uncertainties, I wanted to address alternative food products, but also the blessing of consumer choice and the craziness of COVID-19.

In episode 5 we discuss:

1. How amazing, but sometimes inequal, our consumer choice is

2. How food alternatives might impact current markets

3. Taking our everyday choices for granted

If I'm being honest, I have never felt more uncertain in my life, and while I wanted to focus on the alternative food conversation, I also found myself straying to the conversation of the state of our world as COVID-19 runs its course. As much as I am tired of hearing about it, I feel the need to talk about it.

Quotes worth noting:

"Without consumer choice, I think our world would look a lot different."

"The consumer choice conversation comes from a lot of angles. You can look at it from the amazing flexibility we have, but also from the potential inequality it might create."

"We tend to take everything for granted that we have. The choices we have at the grocery store right now are very limited."

"How could I have prepared differently for something like this?"

"I can't but think the reason [there is still vegan options on the grocery shelves] is because there is so much science and evidence that beef has so many essential nutrients for us. I think people turn to something like beef because the science is there and they realize its a tried and true form of protein that can nourish the human body."

"In reality, I'm sure there are people who eat a vegetarian or vegan diet who have stocked up on their essentials, but the population difference makes it a little less evident."

"With everything going on, it gives us a chance to take a step back and realize how interconnected our world is, but also appreciate what we usually take for granted."

"I don't know if I know a farmer who could put together a cohesive sentence explaining why they work so hard to receive so little."

In the time I have recorded and published this episode, so much has changed for me personally and also within the world. The state of our situation is constantly evolving. I appreciate farmers, healthcare workers, grocery clerks and every individual who is trying to navigate this thing! Stay ruthless, strong and clean; I can't wait to have more conversations with you on the cow pod.
